After the Germany publicised the massacres, the Polish government in exile wanted an investigation, which led Stalin to break off ties with them, and later formed a government made of Polish Communists (not popular in Poland), and Katyn became a forbidden topic. Katyn, as well as the coverup ruined the relationship between the Polish people/Polish government in exile and the Soviet Union, but the official Soviet Polish government was complicit in censoring and hiding the massacres
