I was also watching the BBC documentary 'The Genius of Photography' recently and they had a Kodak historian on who claimed that the company encouraged smiling in photos after the first Brownie camera was released, so people would begin to associate taking pictures with happiness and capturing happy moments (to sell more film obviously).
