A query about good historical texts and engaging biographies...

I sure hope this is the type of question I can ask here. I'm an English student who worries that he doesn't do enough "concrete" historical reading, and I'm looking to expand my knowledge in a few area of interest. Can anyone suggest...

  1. The best biographies on Alexander the Great?
  2. The best text on the rise, existence and fall of Nazi Germany?
  3. Just some suggestions of different engaging historical texts in general

English language text for Nazi Germany is Evans' three volume set. The Coming of the Third Reich, The Third Reich at War, and The Third Reich in Power.

If you are looking for something shorter that reads well, but is more of a textbook formatted book, try Hitler and Nazi Germany: A History by Spielvogel or Hitler's Germany: Origins, Interpretations, Legacies. by Stackleberg.

Edit: A very interesting and engaging book on the Holocaust (one specific incident within it) is Christopher Browning's Ordinary Men.
