Hi guys,so i was reading about Romans and Greeks and their military,and both of them made amazing accomplishments,so i wondered if they ever fought against each other who would have won ? who was better trained,who had better Equipments,Navy,Generals and soldiers. And also was Alexander the great Macedonian or Greek ?
Greeks and Romans did fight, starting in the 3rd century through the 1st. We know who won. It was the Romans. They beat the Greek city states of Italy, they beat Pyrrhus, they beat Syracuse, they beat Macedon, they beat Mithridates, they beat Cleopatra.
There were losses along the way, notably against Pyrrhus. Rome's wins were strategic - the real power of the Roman military wasn't in its weapons or training; it was in being able to put so many more men in the field year after year. Hence the "Pyrrhic victory" - Pyrrhus won battles he couldn't afford to win, as odd as that sounds.
How Rome was able to put so many men in the field and take advantage of them while other states didn't is still a matter of debate. I think the two theories floating around right now are Harris, War and Imperialism in Republican Rome, (not quite traditional... maybe ascendant?) and Eckstein, Mediterranean Anarchy, Interstate War, and the Rise of Rome.
That is not to say these two are the only thoughts on the matter; Polybius back in the 2nd century BCE explicitly wrote his history to explain why Rome beat the Greeks, and people have been working on the question ever since. It is very close to one of the oldest questions in historiography.
As for what nationality Alexander identified as, that's something that is hotly argued about for political reasons now. I don't know any historian who greatly cares for historical reasons.
