Looking for books that cover the history of medieval India, particularly after the 1400s. Books specifically on the Mughals are welcome of course, but I would also like books on the rest of India during this time, and also books that cover the colonization of India.
The single best book that for the entire medieval period you are looking is "India before Europe" by Catherine Asher and Cynthia Talbot. It looks at India between the period of 1200 to 1750. The start date coinciding with the establishment of the first large Muslim power in northern India (the Delhi Sultanate in 1206). The end date coinciding with the establishment of a large European presence in India (British takeover of Bengal in 1757). Things that are somewhat unique in the book
Covers both South and North India (and East India). Most books are focused on Northern India and miss the dynamism of South India (and other regions) during this period.
Cultural, political, philosophical and religious themes described at various regions in India, so you get a very good overview of life in India (at elite level) during this period.
Best introduction to the Vijayanagara Empire and it's cosmopolitan nature. In general, great introduction to regional cultures and cross pollination of ideas across India.
Of course the usual suspects are in there - Delhi sultanate, Mughals, Hindu-Muslim relations etc. but good to see them put in an overall context.
