Most of Greek Warfare seems to have been fought via short campaigns staffed by citizen soldiers or mercenaries however Philip and Alexander were able to stage long campaigns and deploy their troops in relatively complicated manoeuvres.

So I was wondering about just how the Macedonian armies worked - were they made up with men from all the social strata and was their equipment provided for them?

If so did men sign up for a set number of years or a campaign or such, i.e did this lead to a large amount of career soldiers.

And what lead to the reforms to create such an army?
