Speaking strictly as a practitioner of HEMA, the capabilities of a longsword admit of a purpose similar to a handgun today; that is, in many cases, they were a secondary weapon (though not always), a sidearm, especially for someone on horseback, who would probably also be carrying a spear or lance, possibly even a bow. The parallels are limited, though, so don't read to deeply into the comparison.
