So I'm fascinated by medieval disease and this looks similar to the result of syphilis or something akin to this.
Could not find anything to suggest that Edward suffered disease of any kind throughout his life. Wondered if anyone could shed some light on why his nose was painted so, as in other paintings his nose appears fine?
Most probably the cause is not syphylis. The most influental hypothesis of syphilis origin suggests that the desease was brought from the New World long after Edward's death.
Additional info: this painting is displayed in Westminster Abbey and is thought to be of Edward I. I can't find info on the artists
