I loved the history of Rome podcasts and would love a lengthy tome that goes into greater detail. Particularly about the evolution of class divisions over time and economic perspectives that relate.
As I'm not a historian, I'm not looking for a primary source, so what would be a good Layman's guide to the aforementioned subjects?

You might want to check out Ceasar and Christ by Will Durant. A good book that spans the pre-roman era to a fair chunck of the imperial era. It is a bit old but well worth the read.
It is part of his larger series on the history of civilization. All of those books are very good reads.
