I'm Malaysian and in our history textbooks, the Ottoman sultan's call for a jihad was one of the main reasons for local insurrections against the British.
What was the global response to the call for jihad? Was it merely a symbolic action on the sultan's part? If there were responses, how effective were they?

Just to add to /u/bernadito's post, because I had only heard about them recently, but one of the more interesting responses to it was the creation of the German "Half Moon Camps" ("Halbmondlager"). Basically when the Germans captured Muslim POWs from the entente forces (of which there were many, whether British (Greater) Indian soldiers or French Algerians or West Africans, etc.) they sent them to these camps in an attempt to set them up as double agents. I unfortunately I haven't had the chance to read very much about them, but from what I understand they weren't very effective.
