I know some interpretations may not be as accurate, so is this a heavily debated topic because Suni and Shia who disagree on Islamic legacy? I want to know more about the history of Islam and wonder if there are two different "versions" of it depending on association bias.
While translations of the Qur'an are a matter of dispute (I prefer Pickthall), I haven't come across the same issues in regards to translations of the hadith. I'm quite comfortable with the translations provided by http://sunnah.com/ for instance. The only downside being that they don't translate the isnads, the chain of transmissions that trace back to Muhammad. They also don't have Shia hadith collections.
To the root of your question though, I don't think comparing hadith collections would be a good way to go about understanding the differences between Shia and Sunni Islam. I would start with a good introductory book on the topic, something like W.M. Watt's The Formative Period in Islamic Thought.
