To be specific, I'm looking for books on the history of the re-discovery of tombs and major monuments over the past few centuries, not books on the ancient history of Egypt itself. Pretty much everyone knows about Howard Carter and King Tut, of course, but I confess I didn't know much more than that; I was at the Fields Museum in Chicago earlier today, and learned about the cache of mummies at Deir el-Bahari, and found it fascinating. I've been looking around for any books that cover this topic as a general overview, and not having a lot of luck, so any recommendations are appreciated - general overview, or a book covering a specific find that you think is interesting. Anything from the finding of the pyramids onward, basically. Thanks much!
It's from a somewhat specific perspective but I've enjoyed Whose Pharaohs?: Archæology, Museums, and Egyptian National Identity from Napoleon to World War I by Donald Malcolm Reid which specifically looks at the institutional development of Egyptology in Egypt and the role of native Egyptians in the field. It's more about institution building and the roles of individuals than stories about discovering tombs though.
