The long and the short of it is that Roman politics did not know anything like political parties. Temporary alliance between interested individuals might form from time to time, but there was no organization and no expectation of lasting cooperation--often bitter enemies aligned with each other for various purposes. Anything remotely approaching our concept of a political party would have been totally alien to a Republican politician
