I've read Vera Brittain on mustard gas, but what about the earlier gases - chlorine and phosgene? Could anyone point me to contemporary descriptions of what it was like to suffer a gas attack and survive - what sort of long-term effects might you have and how would you recover?
It depends on the gas used. Mustard Gas would temporarily blind soldiers so it was more of an inconvenience than anything. There were very few fatalities that weren't related to lack of oxygen. Chlorine gas on the other hand was a bit different. Very few survived Chlorine Gas, and the ones that did had massive lung damage such as severe burns. This usually left soldiers with massive breathing problems for the rest of their lives.
Thank you very much!
