GAME OF THRONES SEASON 6 EPISODE 10 THE WINDS OF WINTER SPOILER ALERT. So there seems to be a lot of confusion and disagreement over two of the last scenes in the final episode. In one Varys is in Dorne getting support from the Sand Snakes and Olenna Tyrell. Then 2 scenes later he is with Daenerys and her fleet with Dornish and Tyrell ships. The timing makes it seem that this is days apart but it must be at least a week or two, but some people are arguing that it is months. I don't think that's the case. Didn't it take Columbus something like 3 to 4 weeks to cross the Atlantic? And that was him traveling uncharted waters with no knowledge of the wind patterns or really any idea of where he was heading. Also just take a look at a map of Westeros and Essos and it's easy to see that the Narrow Sea is named so for one reason....it's very NARROW. In fact I bet it's no more than half the distance between North America and Europe across. Could someone with proper knowledge of these things help confirm or dispel my theory please?
Columbus took about five weeks to sail from the Canary Islands to San Salvador (which may or may not be the current island of the same name), Sept. 6-Oct. 12, 1492. After exploring part of the Caribbean, he left the modern-day Dominican Republic in mid-January 1493, returning to Lisbon, with a stop in the Azores, on March 4, 1493. That time period, of 5-7 weeks to reach the Caribbean, was fairly consistent; during the period I study, Villeneuve's fleet took about five weeks from the Med to the Caribbean in their feint before Trafalgar.
All that said, I would be extremely wary of generalizing that to a fantasy series that has magic and dragons, and, from the look of them, amazingly impractical ships. 😉
