Upper class clothing of men and women used to be very complicated and changed many times a day. Assistance was needed for dressing. Hooking tiny buttons, hooks and ties was almost impossible to do one ones own. Also the clothing was expensive and took lots of care so a valet or ladies maid would have spent hours a day cleaning, ironing, shining and organizing the wardrobes.
