I'm a history teacher and trying to compile a comprehensive list for my kids. The problem is, when I go to do the research, I find things like "liberal ideals" or "growth of state power". Instead, I'm looking for effects like pants or the metric system--things that average teens would actually be feeling the effects of either in their daily lives (ie. pants for fashion) or in classes (metric system). Thank you all for helping me make a stronger history lesson for my kids!
If I were in your position, I would go into detail about what "liberal ideals" and "state power" are and how they affect the kids today. Those "fun fact" things are actually less engaging for young teenagers than a coherent historical narrative that tells them something about how the world around them works.
In France they are quite a few examples, such as the Departments (a subdivision of France, 101 of them in 2016) and quite a few institutions.
Internationally, The humans rights have probably the biggest day-to-day impact. The modern conscription system was created to fight the counter-revolutionary wars. The abolition of slavery following the Revolution of 1792 and its re-implementation by napoleon leads to the independence of Haiti, the 1^st country with a black majority to gain independence.
