I would certainly recommend The Republic of St. Peter by Thomas Noble, it only covers the period from 680 to 825 but I enjoyed his take on writing the history of the papacy from the Italian perspective

I've read The Popes by John Julius Norwich, in which he goes through each pope up to the start of Benedict XVI. It's very readable and extremely interesting, I thoroughly recommend it.
