I am particularly curious about how many people actually returned home. As well as what those experiences were like. Both in terms of journey and readjustment. Do we have any or good historical evidence that provides insight into this on a broader scale as opposed to single stories or anecdotes?
I understand that most people who were taken in the slave trade were disempowered and had little standing in their communities. However I am wondering also about if after they returned their experiences changed the conversation at all in Africa about the slave trade?
More than 15,000 American and 3,000 Caribbean free Blacks and former slaves moved to Liberia after that country had its beginning as an effort by the American Colonization Society, also known by its full name The Society for the Colonization of Free People of Color of America to create a home land for free Black people in Africa.
