The Stoic and Buddhist writings seem very similar in their core messages and were written around the same time period. Did the two philosophies appear separately or did one influence the other?

This question might be inappropriate for this sub, but are stoicism and Buddhism really that similar, or are the similarities only skin deep? I only have token knowledge about both, but isn't Buddhism all about realising "no-self"/no ego-consciousness and acquiring wisdom that transcends logic/language while stoicism is about steeling your self through logic/rationality?
