I hear about the Anglo-Saxons, the Britons, Normans, Germanic peoples and even the Romans but to this day I have no idea what happened in the dark ages and the later medieval that caused us to have what we have now as the English. I had always assumed they were mostly descendants of the Britons but all the history I look up shows domination by the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and with William the Conquerer, the Normans. With so much foreign invasion is there even a single major ancestor for the British? I know very little on the topic and would love some enlightenment, my research skills are hopeless.
