In Greek mythology, there is indeed an ancient god of irony, mockery, and practical jokes. He can be traced back to Aesop's fables, from the 5th century BCE in Greece. There is actually a German fresco depicting Momus criticizing God for his foolish creations, from 1561, Berlin. It was this criticism that cast him down to Earth, being forever banished from Mount Olympus.
