Are there any examples from WWI or WWII of governments or militaries attempting to rescue enemy soldiers from situations not caused by men? (Flooding, cave collapsing, fire, etc)

I'm trying to understand how the military and governments of WWI/WWII would have responded to a situation similar to the current one where 100 ISIS combatants are trapped in a cave system.

As a bit of an expansion on this, what about giving aid, such as, provisions to soldier in a situation like this.

I dont have an answer for you but I cant help but ask the motivation behind this question. It is incredibly obscure and specific and even if there were examples of this haplening, they would be isolated events. Are you working on some project? Can I ask what thesis you are strengthening a narrative for?
