I consider his books on mythology to be generally informative, though his versions of the myths are "watered down", with all the potentially offensive stuff removed (cf. Edith Hamilton's works). Bulfinch wasn't a scholar, nor were his books "scholarly" in the way we think of the word; there is no reason to believe these books were especially authoritative in any way; the emphasis is chiefly on the entertainment value of the stories.
