Wallace would have spoken Norman French at court, and with other noblemen. With commoners, he would have spoken a form of English.

As a well-traveled man who kept company with other well traveled people, Wallace had probably learned the art of shifting from one dialect to another. Thus, he was probably able to communicate with speakers of the many dialects of northern England and southern Scotland. He may even have been able to make sense of the Low German of the Hanseatic towns or the dialects of southern England.

Chances are that Wallace had some familiarity with Latin and Gaelic, and perhaps even Norse or Flemish. Latin was the language of both the Church and diplomacy. Gaelic was the language of poetry and song at the Scottish court. Norse and Flemish were spoken by people from countries with which Scotland had important diplomatic and economic relationships.
