I haven't read it (among other things, it's 900 pages long) but it's my understanding that Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy is the great grand daddy of historical depression (melancholia.) He includes and comments on an incredible array of historical sources, infused with his own excellent writing and charm.
