The map in question, Europa Regina.
I've talked with a colleague about this and we're not finding much information about this other than eux. might mean euxine, but we're far from certain.
Would greatly appreciate if anyone could shed some light on this for us.
Pontus Euxinus is the Latin term for the Black Sea. (The "n" in "Pontus" is represented by a bar above the "o".)
I have a follow up question: The mappae mundi of the middle ages usually put east at the top, maps for the purpose of naval orientation put north at the top and I know of some arabian medieval maps that put south at the top. This is the first map I encounter where there is west at the top. Does anybody know if this is solely for the reason of depicting Europe as regina or if there is more to it? Thanks in advance.
