I was looking at medal charts and even the previous olympics germany was no where close to winning this many medals. My first conclusion is that they cheated. Is there any documented proof?
Raw numbers probably had something to do with it. Being the host nation, they had a substantially larger team than most anyone else. Over twice the size of GB or France, for example, an extra 30% or so over the USA. The previous Olympics, 1932, the Germans sent a team only a quarter the team size they had in 1936. In 1928, the Germans came in second in the medal count, with a team barely larger than the USA, which beat them.
