You're mistaken, they didn't (mostly). Many remained Tengrist, some converted to Islam, some converted to Christianity. A small part of the (now fragmented) empire, the Golden Horde (SW Russia/Kazakhstan) turned Muslim in the beginning of the 14th century, other religions were made illegal (while normal policy was religious tolerance).
