You would really need to clarify which alphabets you are referring to, and indeed whether solely alphabets or writing systems in general, which include alphabets such as Latin, abugidas and abjads, such as Hindi or Arabic respectively, and logographic systems such as those used in written Chinese. From the little I know, it is theorised that writing systems going quite far into the 'eastern world' may share origins with the dominant Latin and Greek-based alphabets of the 'western world'.
I am no expert on this, but I will try to answer your question. Most writing systems of the west are in some way descended from early Canaanite alphabets, which were more or less simplified pictograms. In the east, on the other hand, most writing systems in some way descended from ancient Chinese, which came from pictograms that were made more complex rather than simplified.
