How did the system of getting horses during long distance travel across Europe work? Was there international standards and did horses have to in a certain condition to trade in for new ones?

You might get better results in this sub (though not from me, unfortunately) by asking about specific areas or eras. Europe is kind of big, and horses were the fastest form of long-distance travel from the dawn of history there until 100 years ago.
