You could argue that Ireland gained it's independence by making itself too expensive to maintain, especially in the wake of the First World War. Of course, Home Rule had already been passed and was due to come in, but the experiences of the Easter Rising and the War of Independence meant that Home Rule alone was no longer enough and the main Irish political party (Sinn Fein) demanded more.
