Pretty much as the title says. Throughout the old testament, whenever the story centers around war or fighting, usually phrases like "They killed them with swords" or "they were struck down by swords" is very common, yet most other weapon types are rarely mentioned at all.
I have also seen several Quranic passages mentioning swords specifically.
Is there a particular cultural or religious reason for why the sword is so often mentioned in the text, or did the ancient hebrews literally fight almost exclusively with swords?
As a related question, Saul is often mentioned with a spear, rather than a sword. This has always struck me as odd, since I assumed swords are more of a prestige item than spears (being harder to make and more expensive). Is there a reason certain high-ranking or otherwise prominent individuals in history and mythology are associated with spears, even when lesser figures are associated with swords? (Odin and his spear come to mind, as well as Cuchulain)
An important point to note about your question: the Bible was written over centuries, spanning both the Bronze and Iron Ages. Weaponry was far from static during this time, and the Bible even makes reference (e.g. Judges 2) to the fact that the Israelites entering Canaan did not (yet) have iron weapons, putting them at a disadvantage. There isn't going to be a simple explanation for why, over the entire Bible, one kind of weapon is more or less common than another.
