Ideally from both Allies and Central Powers/Axis (or even major participant nation if you feel inclined). I do mean combat not just bombing runs that happened to hit a headquarters somewhere, unless such an event was especially notable.

On the Japanese side, Isoroku Yamamoto, the commander of the Japanese Combined Fleet and architect of the attack on Pearl Harbor, was the highest ranked officer to die as a direct result of enemy action (and possibly the highest ranking officer on any side in WWII).
The itinerary for his inspection tour was intercepted and decrypted by American code-breakers, and his transport was ambushed by American aircraft based out of Guadalcanal in Operation Vengeance. He was the equivalent of a four-star admiral, and received a posthumous promotion to Gensui (equivalent to Field Marshal or Fleet Admiral in American terms).
