I'm having one of those arguments with the significant other.
I gather that onions (and closely related garlic) are native to some (disputed) place in central Eurasia. But is there evidence that they ever reached America before Columbus? Or was there some kind of distant relative going all the way back to Pangaea?
Ramps are the closest edible relative. They are more pungent and flavorful than onions. They are harvested in the spring in the Appalachians and southern Canada.
