There was a wide variance depending on who you are, where you are, and when you lived. Each of the colonies had their distinct characters. New England was roughly an imitation of rural England, consisting of villages that were mostly self-sufficient, and traded their surplus. On the other hand, the coastal southern colonies were a cash crop economy with large slave-owning estates focused on growing tobacco and cotton. Further into West Indies, the economy was focused on growing sugar. I haven't even covered Spanish Americas yet.
