How were Asian Americans soldiers treated during World War 2, Korean War, and Vietnam?
I know this may sound dumb, but I have never seen an Asian American soldier in any picture or movie. I mean, do y'all recall seeing an Asian American solider in Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan, etc? Is there a reason for this, or...? I'm just curious.
There definitely were Asian Americans that served in the US military in those wars. Even aside from the famed Japanese-American units like the 442nd Regiment/100th Battalion, there were Asian American officers who served and commanded non-segregated units.
Rear Admiral Gordon Chung-hoo served as a destroyer's commanding officer during WW2 and made Rear Admiral after the war, retiring in 1959. He was awarded the Navy Cross and Silver Star in WW2. Source
The destroyer USS Chung-hoon (DDG-93) is named after him
Another example is Captain Francis Wai, of Chinese descent, who served in the 24th Infantry Division in the Pacific. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Phillipines. Source and photos
