I haven't seen a question come in for the Home Economics/Family and Consumer Sciences department in a hot minute! It's funny you should ask for that time period because the 70s is the time of "rebirth" of the Home Ec academic field of study, when it re-branded as consumer research and consumer education, much before the 70s and you'd have a harder time researching this topic.

I can give you some interesting historical records but I'm afraid they're a bit academic... Here's a consumer survey from 1979 about general consumer confidence you might like, if you're at about just any university you can get data out of ICPSR. There's also all the back issues of Journal of Consumer Research in JStor, which is easy enough to get access to. If you want just some work analyzing the general household's consumption and purchase of appliances in the 70s, I can recommend you a book: More Work for Mother, which is about the increasing purchase of appliances and its effect on household labor.
