Can anyone elaborate on divisions within the Italian community on "whiteness"?

I remember a great-grand uncle telling me that "we are nothing like those mafia-tangled Neapolitans or Sicilians--they are a dark, swarthy people. We don't associate them them. We're Northern Italians from so far north we're Swiss!"

So were there Italian immigrants who saw themselves as and/or were perceived as "white" in contrast to Italian immigrants from other areas, and who received any different treatment?
