I don't know about an election when most Americans disliked both candidates, but I've been thinking a lot about 1824 and 1828 during this election cycle to make myself feel a little better. These were elections between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. Both were rife with corruption: the 1824 election was effectively decided in a back room in an event termed "the Corrupt Bargain" - one that gave John Quincy Adams the presidency in return for Henry Clay's position as Secretary of State.

The 1828 election was filled with an unprecedented amount of mudslinging that, in my mind, compares to 2016. Jackson's wife, Rachel, was accused of bigamy because of an unfinalized divorce, and she died within a few weeks of Jackson's inauguration (legend has it she literally died from the stress and heartbreak of the election process). There was even more detrimental gossip among Adams's cabinet members' wives.
