Reference to this is made in various fictional works such as "Sherlock Holmes Shadow Games", and earlier in Joseph Conrad's 1907 novel "The Secret Agent". What was these groups ultimate goal? Was it a combination of movements among the Socialists, Communists, and Anarchists? Did they want to overthrow the monarchies of Europe?

Their goal was to use violence as "propaganda of the deed" to inspire others to rebel against the state. Anarchists ultimately desire to overthrow the state, especially the monarchies of Europe and saw society as a powder keg of potential. They saw their actions as potentially igniting that powder keg and foment the sort of revolution which would allow them to form the sort of stateless society they wanted. Just as they saw gunpowder as having overthrown the feudal order, they believed that the dynamite would allow them to overthrow the capitalist order.
