I'm well aware that lice was a major problem, but how much more common occurring were other parasites? Specifically, were there more cases of insects laying eggs on / in people? I've seen a lot of similar stories on r/cringe recently and I wondered if the hygienic habits of those in that time period would lead to a substantial increase in parasites.
This was more of a problem in regions like Africa, the Mediterranean, and southern Asia, where hot weather hosts a much larger number of parasitic organisms and harmful microbes (just like it does today). Hygiene has always had a lot to do with the rise of epidemics - the first case of this with a specifically parasitic organism is the prevalence of hookworm in the southern United States up until 100 years ago - mostly an issue because people went barefoot.
