This question also makes me think, why is Ethiopia even called Ethiopia today? From doing some quick reading now, before the 20th century it seems to have been called Al-Habash / Abyssinia by foreigners, and I haven't been able to find what it was called by the Ethiopians themselves.

Which makes me think maybe it's only called Ethiopia because that's what the Italians called it, seeing as they loved giving their colonies ancient Greek names (eg Libya and Eritrea).

So my question is, firstly am I right that the modern use of the term 'Ethiopia' derives from Italian usage, and secondly, what did the inhabitants of the Ethiopian empire (1137-1974) call it before the Italians arrived?
