"Emperor" in the western sense comes from the Latin "Imperator", which was a title given by Roman armies to their military commander - it means "one who has Imperium". Imperium is roughly the concept of authority to rule.

In China on the other hand, what we call "Emperor" was originally a quasi-religious function, not a military one - something like "Defender of the Faith".
