Well you know how to ask difficult questions, could you define what you mean by Capitalism? If you mean the private ownership of the means of production(be it land, serfs, slaves, factories etc) then one could argue its been around for a very long time indeed and is simply the most prevalent economic system of mankind. If you mean modern industrial capitalism I'm not really your man(mea culpa ancient historian sum), perhaps because people are not very nice?
