I don't have a fantastic answer to this, but the most important thing about geography in terms of the British empire is the amount of coastline the country is, and the fact that it's an island. This required them to amass a large, technologically-advanced Navy early on in order to trade with literally any other country. Advanced Naval technology didn't create the British empire, but it was certainly an asset.
