I want to learn more about the French general and later emperor. What's the best way to go about this? I do have a weakness for a detail rich documentary!
I would suggest Napoleon: A Life by Andrew Roberts. It's a quality biography that is a bit Bonapartist (supportive of Napoleonic family) but much better than the anti-Napoleonic historiography that plagues most English language biographies of him. Otherwise I cannot recommend anything else that is broad for no documentary reaches the detail of Roberts.
