Although it might seem counterintuitive for a suicide mission, helmets, as well as other flight gear were an important component of a Tokko (special attack) pilot's ability to carry out his mission. The important thing to realize about Tokko missions is that both the IJN and IJA saw them as evolving out of regular conventional air attacks. Tokko aircraft had escorts, strategies, and even contingency planning if the target was somehow missed or obscured. Flight helmets were thus a necessary component for the pilot to complete his mission. The fur- or canvas-lined helmet helped keep the pilot's head warm during missions, allowing him not to be distracted by environmental factors. The IJN and IJA's goggles were designed to be used with the helmet which had fastener points at their rear to secure the goggles. Eye protection was needed for these unpressurized aircraft, which could be quite drafty and dirty, so they too were a required part of a Japanese pilot's mission, whether for conventional or special attacks. Likewise, flight equipment like oxygen masks, throatmikes, and headphones were designed to be worn with the flight helmet. While these components could have been worn without one, it recquired more adjustments and fiddling with their various fasteners. Leather helmets also provided a rudimentary form of protection against shrapnel or other debris, which was also an important consideration for a Tokko pilot descending through a curtain of Allied AA and its CAP.
