Hi guys,
I am an incoming fourth year student studying MEng in Computing. I am currently working with Margam Castle in Wales for my fourth year dissertation which aims to create an augmented reality application of one of the rooms for the castle. The castle was finished in 1840 but at present the rooms are bare due to the owner selling everything off in the (19)40s, and a fire in the (19)70s so I have no knowledge of the colour scheme except for a set of extremely rare images taken by Spencer Nicholls in 1885. The images are obviously in black and white, I would really appreciate if anyone could tell me the most likely colour of the wallpaper/carpet/furniture or at least point me in the right direction in terms of research. I also have a copy of the auctioned items (1940s) which gives a quick description of the furniture sold but I'm not sure if it matches what is in the photos, since there is a 50 year gap.
Thanks a lot to anyone willing to help!
Edit: Butchered the title, is 19th century!
It's a little hard to say, if for no other reason that the furniture and wallpaper aren't likely to have been purchased in 1885. The wallpaper follows the Gothic Revival style of the 1840s and 1850s from when the house was constructed and could have been installed any time between. For wallpaper (or furniture) I'd recommend looking up Pugin, most of his work is that Gothic Revival style. Searching for images of "Aesthetic Movement" would also help you visualize what was a major trend of that era, the style was popular from 1870-1890. There are also modern companies reproducing historic wallpaper that have images of historic home interiors, such as Bradbury & Bradbury.
Oh, also, 1885 would refer to 19th century rather than 18th (that being 1700-1799).
