I haven't studied much French archaeology, but nothing like that made its way back into the Scandinavian hoards or burials that I've seen. Admittedly, metal armor very rarely appears in Scandinavian burials, although weapons and perhaps leather armor would have. So yeah, I suspect that this is another example of Vikings exploiting gaps in the historical and archaeological record, rather than negotiating the evidence that we actually have.
